Majorca has long been a favorite for week-long package holidays, but it also happens to be the perfect destination for a shorter escape. With quick flights, sunny beaches, and a lively mix of luxury and affordable spots, it’s surprisingly easy to squeeze a lot into just a few days. I recently spent three nights on the island and came home feeling like I’d had a full holiday—without the time or cost of a longer trip.
Why Majorca Works So Well for a Weekend
The first reason is simple: it’s close. Flights from Manchester take just under two and a half hours, and with plenty of departure times, it’s easy to find a schedule that fits neatly into a long weekend. Combine that with a short transfer from the airport to many of the island’s best areas, and you won’t lose precious time traveling.
Then there’s the weather. From April through October, Majorca is reliably sunny and warm. While winters can be quieter and cooler, spring through autumn gives you that dreamy Mediterranean vibe—perfect for beaches, al fresco dining, or exploring villages.
Most importantly, Majorca packs a lot into a small space. From the lively capital of Palma to serene mountain towns, glamorous harbors, and turquoise coves, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. And unlike some mainland Spanish destinations, Majorca’s scenery has a softer, more picturesque charm—every corner feels made for postcards.
Where to Stay
For a quick trip, it makes sense to stay near Palma. The capital is close to the airport, so you’ll maximize time spent relaxing rather than driving. If you prefer a city vibe, Palma itself has endless cafes, shops, and historic sites.
I chose to base myself in Portals Nous, just 20 minutes from the airport, and it turned out to be ideal. This upscale area is best known for its yacht-filled marina and polished beach bars, but it still manages to feel welcoming rather than exclusive. Even if you’re not splurging, you can enjoy a cocktail overlooking the harbor before heading to a more budget-friendly restaurant nearby. And the beaches here are stunning—golden sand, clear water, and totally free to enjoy.
Hotel Pick: Exe Portals Nous
I stayed at the Exe Portals Nous, booked through Jet2holidays. It’s a no-frills hotel but had everything I needed for a comfortable stay: spotless rooms, a modern bathroom, and balconies overlooking the pool. The pool area itself was relaxed, never overcrowded, and had a small bar for drinks and snacks.
The buffet breakfast deserves a special mention. Each morning started with fresh bread, cheeses, fruit, eggs, sausages, and—yes—even a few cakes to go with that final coffee. It was generous enough that I often skipped or downsized lunch.
The staff made the stay especially enjoyable, always offering advice or a warm smile. On the last day, even though we checked out at noon, they let us use a spare room to shower and change before heading to the airport in the evening. It was a small touch that made a big difference.
One thing to note: the walk into town is short but hilly, which can feel longer in the midday heat. Taxis aren’t always reliable here, so pack comfy shoes if you’re planning to explore on foot.
Do You Need a Car?
For a longer stay, hiring a car is a great idea. It’s affordable, and the island is full of hidden coves and mountain villages worth discovering. But for a three-night break, I actually think you can skip it. Portals Nous had enough to keep me entertained, and the short timeframe meant I preferred relaxing over long drives.
That said, if you do hire a car, get an early start each day. Parking fills quickly at popular beaches and towns, and you don’t want to waste time hunting for a spot under the midday sun.
Making the Most of a Short Trip
If you only have a weekend, efficiency is everything. Stay close to the airport, choose an area with plenty of dining and beach options, and plan flights that give you maximum time on the ground. An early outbound flight and late return mean you can turn three nights into four nearly full days.
Here are a few highlights from my own itinerary:
- Day 1: Arrive in the morning, check in, and spend the afternoon by the pool before dinner nearby.
- Day 2: Morning trip to Cala Llombards and Caló des Moro for beaches, lunch at a quiet local bar, then back to the hotel pool. Evening drinks at Freddy’s Beach Bar followed by dinner at a stylish spot overlooking the water.
- Day 3: Morning in Valldemossa and Deià, wandering cobbled streets and sipping coffee on mountain-view terraces. Afternoon swim back in Portals Nous, dinner at a casual but excellent restaurant.
- Day 4: Relax on the beach and enjoy a leisurely lunch before heading back to the airport.
Can It Be Done on a Budget?
Absolutely. While Portals Nous has its share of luxury, you don’t need to spend much to enjoy yourself. The beaches are free, the hotel was affordable, and meals can be as inexpensive or indulgent as you choose. To keep costs low, travel in May or late September for lower rates, lean on that generous hotel breakfast, and stock your minibar with supermarket drinks.
Final Thoughts
Majorca proves that a proper holiday doesn’t need to last a full week. With quick flights, reliable sunshine, and plenty to do within easy reach of Palma, it’s an ideal choice for a short but satisfying break. Whether you’re sipping sangria by a yacht marina, hiking through mountain villages, or simply lazing on golden sand, three days here feels like much more—and leaves you ready to plan the next trip before you’ve even landed home.
